Ski in Chepelare
The Municipality of Chepelare is working on a huge project for the development of ski-area ‘Mechi Chal’ near the town. That was announced by Todor Bozukov, the mayor on the opening of the new ski season 2005/2006. The total amount needed for this project is 11 mln. EURO, which will be provided by the funds of the European Union as well as other private investors.
The project is for building of 4 new lifts and drags as well as modernizing of the existing 2-chair lift. By these new facilities the ski are of Chepelare will be connected with the ski area of the bigger resorts around Pamporovo. The new drags lifts will be more than 2 km long, and the ski tracks will be 25 km long in total. Even now Chepelare has the longest ski track 5km. and 300metre in Bulgaria, that has been approved by the International Ski Federation.
Olympic Champion born in Chepelare Ekaterina Dafovska will give the official start of the ski season in the picturesque town of Chepelare on December 13.
The Rhodopes resort is a beloved site for fast and long skiing. It has a sports school teaching some of Bulgaria’s best athletes in ski sports, including biathlon-runner Ekaterina Dafovska.
Chepelare (1100 m above sea level) is a small Bulgarian mountain town in Rhodopi mountain, very near by Pamporovo.

The first ski run is called ‘Chala’ 3150 m long and 50 m wide, with a displacement of 720 m, while the second ski run called ‘Turisticheska’ is 5250 m long and 25 m wide, displacement 720 m. The long distance ski run is 30 km (longest in Bulgaria). For those looking for a busier skiing resort, only 10 km South-West is Pamporovo, one of the largest and most famous ski centers.
The places of interest in Chepelare are:
St.Atanas Church; St. Virgin Mary Church and the Rojen Observatory. The observatory is about 15 km far from the resort, on the Mechi Chal peak. A regular transport the observatory is not available, but you can go up there walking for about 2 hours, take a taxi, or ask the hotel owner to organize it for you.
The observatory is open for tourists visits and from there you can observe almost all of the Western Rhodopi mountain.
Lodging:
Many small privately owned hotels are available in Chepelare. During the winter the resort and the hotels are quite busy and a booking is required. Most of the hotels are 4 or 5 stars. Most of the hotels have restaurants where guests can order breakfast or dinner. Ski rentals are available at the hotels too.
