Vava’u Scooters & Snorkels Limited in the heart of Neiafu on the island of Vava’u Lahi is for sale. This is the only scooter rental in Vava’u and most likely the whole country. With very few car rental locations it is a very popular mode of transportation. The business also conducts Snorkel tours to the islands of the Vava’u group on a 19-foot KW Marine boat with a Yamaha 40hp engine which was purchased new in 2006. There are many wonderful locations for snorkeling and just exploring the islands and villages. . The retail portion of the business currently sales snorkeling equipment and beach related supplies like sunscreen, after sun lotions, surf shirts, beach towels, etc., but is licensed to sell much more. Also included is Laumanu Sport Fishing, which consists of a 6 meter Diesel powered fishing boat and fishing equipment. The boat is very economical being powered by a 130hp Volvo Penta engine, which allows the business a niche market being the least expensive charter boat available. It is equipped with a fantastic fighting chair, Killwell outriggers, VHF, Depth sounder, Stereo, Portable Toilet, gaffs, 4 big game rod and reels and much more.
The business is perfect for a couple that wishes to run a small business with little or no effort. There are plenty of qualified Tongan Skippers available to run the boats, or skipper them yourself. Advertising consisted of a few flyers at accommodations and the occasional ad on the daily “Cruisers Net.” We have increased our visibility by getting more flyers in to accommodations, but also, there is now an ad in the Tonga Telephone Book. Currently the shop employs one Tongan employee and the owner conducts the boat tours and fishing charters. This could be run any way as the current employee has extensive experience with the islands having worked for a kayak tour company for many years.
There are many options for running this business. We have been approached with requests to provide our boats for rental, but have never really followed up on the option. Outer Island camping excursions and tours, who knows. The sky is the limit with the proper permissions and licenses.
